Katrina O’Brien’s striking works of ink, acrylic and graphite sway between painting and drawing. Indeed, Katrina sees her artwork as a kind of dance, and a way of delving into her own and others’ inner psyche.

Says Katrina: “The only way to describe this work is with the following story…”

I walked to the ocean and stood on the sand. Long dress flowing in the warm breeze which was pulling my hair towards the sea. I took off my shoes and left them behind. Slowly but steadily I stepped into the water. It called to me in a way it hadn’t before. It used to call me to lay under the waves, to close my eyes and let it wash me away. This call was different.

As I walked into the water, it went over my head but I could still breathe – though it was a different breath to that which I breathed on land. (It was somehow easier to breathe in the purposeful waters.) My feet touched the ocean floor, as if there were lead in them to weigh me down….yet my steps were light as a lovers gentle kiss. The darkness never overtook me. There was always a light before me. The more I walked, the more I realised I was glowing with purpose.

I passed through ancient realms that felt so familiar to me, as if I’d been there before. Footsteps lay before me in the sand that were the same size as mine. Had I dreamt of this place? Had I been there before?

There was no night or day, just a passage through time, lit up by the promise of something long desired but never realised.

The light became clearer and brighter and I knew what was coming.

I walked out of the sea to where you were waiting on the shore and you embraced me – a wordless embrace, full of knowledge. Kindred spirits – displaced by time. The water from my wet body didn’t seep into your clothes but your body dried mine with your warmth.
