Curatorial+Co.’s highly anticipated end of year small works show, DARING (previously Darlings), invites artists to colour outside the lines of their practice through exploration, risk and play. Be bold, be brave, be DARING.

In Summer Evening, Susie captures the resonant pulse of cicadas and the haunting hoot of the powerful owl to evoke the sensory atmosphere of a warm twilight. The rhythmic pulse of the cicadas is rendered in delicate, layered columns, while the owl’s call emerges as deeper, singular shape, layered at the back, anchoring the composition. Combining spectrogram data of sound recordings with personal sensory experience, Susie’s work visualises the immersive, textured soundscape of an Australian summer night.

Says Susie of why her work is DARING: “These paintings mark a DARING evolution in my practice, pushing boundaries by transforming digitally rendered soundscapes into hand-painted forms and introducing the use of an airbrush to evoke atmosphere and depth.”
