This work is part of Susie Dureau’s 2025 solo exhibition, Rhythmia.
Says Dureau of her work, “This body of work reflects my growing awareness of the pulse of all things, including the earth itself, as captured in the spectrograms (visual representations of sound) I have been researching and recording since 2020. My landscapes are not just external vistas; they are also self-portraits, mapping the interplay between my own body’s rhythms and the larger forces that shape our multi-species reality.
“Spectrograms have played a crucial role in informing this body of work. By translating recorded pulses and frequencies into images, I have become attuned to an invisible reality that exists beyond human perception. These visual traces reveal the many ways that non-human species communicate. My paintings seek to echo this, offering a kind of visual listening, a space where sound and rhythm become visible. My works invite the viewer to sense the pulse of the earth, feel the unseen currents that connect us to the world, and experience the shared rhythm of body and landscape.”
“The Dream of Life unfolds in layered blues, fading in and out like falling rain with soft edges dissolving into deeper tones. Inspired by Alan Watts’ philosophy, it reflects existence as a dance between self and universe, an intricate game where separation is an illusion, and all things are expressions of a singular, unfolding whole. Shifting tones mirror the fluid nature of consciousness—drifting between waking and dreaming, form and formlessness. Rather than seeking static permanence, the painting invites surrender to movement, embracing impermanence as a source of wonder, where individual moments dissolve into the vast, ever-changing flow of experience.”
This work is framed in Tasmanian oak.
