This work is part of Kiata Mason’s 2025 exhibition, The New Wave Luddite.
The exhibition The New Wave Luddite is a discussion on finding balance with the increasing dominance of technology in our lives, especially considering AI straying at a faster and faster pace into fields of creativity. In some ways, this exhibition might be seen as mirroring the historical nineteenth-century Arts and Crafts movement, which was in response to the Industrial Revolution. During this period, the Luddite movement pushed back against the developments of the industrial age to preserve the value of ‘human-made’ commodities.
This resistance extended further into the realms of architecture, design, and art, foregrounding the development of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, advocating for handcrafted objects over mass production and seeking to elevate decorative arts to a fine art status. The New Wave Luddite is a contemporary response to the age of AI. With this exhibition, I hope to celebrate the art of creating, the process of creation and the time and study that it takes to create.
