This work is part of Jasmine Poole and Chris Sewell’s 2024 exhibition, I Have More To Say.
This body of work is the follow-on from their lockdown series I Have Something to Tell You from 2020. Like the first chapter, this collection of photographs creates the illusion that the viewer is located within each frame, caught in the exact moment when something untoward occurs. A sense of intimacy is created through the tight crop composition where only part of the location is accessible to the viewer – we have to imagine what else there is to the story, the scene. With the clever use of cinematic lighting a melancholic atmosphere is cast – just like the catharsis you feel when listening to a sad song, encountering these moments is much the same.
There are no figures in any of the works. Instead, objects communicate a human presence – a tap left running, a cigarette left burning, a teacup overflows. The audience is both a voyeur and a participant. Sometimes it just takes one object to inspire a conversation – a missing photograph off a wall, a love note in a bouquet, a deflated balloon in the backseat of a car. Who are they, what has been left unsaid and where do we go from here? Bringing our own lived experiences to these photographs allows each viewer the opportunity to weave their narrative within Jasmine’s and Chris’s worlds.
