Tracey Lamb is a sculptor from Melbourne who creates unique, organic welded sculptures she refers to as Spatial Verbs. Her work reflects an interest in modern composition, interior design, architecture and minimalism. Her sculptures playfully explore the multitude of possibilities that can be found in the meaning of the operational verb, a term used in the spatial language of architecture to explore the abstraction of space and form.
Each work of Tracey’s takes up to a week to design and construct. Her processes include cutting and bending the steel by hand before tacking, then fully welding the pieces together to create a form that appears as a solid shape. The works are then cleaned and buffed before being given a protective treatment. Some of the objects are partially undercoated then sprayed with a coloured enamel, then given a top coat of clear gloss. Other sculptures will be given a clear coating straight over the raw steel. This allows the beautiful markings and movement of the cleaning and buffing process to be displayed on the surface of the sculpture.
Tracey has completed a Master of Fine Art at Monash University (2018) for which she was awarded the Palazzi MFA Award and has a Bachelor of Fine Art (Visual Art) Honours from the Victorian College of the Arts (2013) where she was awarded the Fiona Myer Award and had her work selected to exhibit in Fresh at Craft Victoria. She also has qualifications in Interior Design and Decoration, working in that area prior to concentrating on art full time.
Showing work since 2012, Tracey has exhibited in numerous exhibitions throughout Australia, as well as Berlin and Milan. Tracey has been shortlisted for multiple art awards, including The Churchie, The Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition, Yarra Valley, Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Art, Montsalvat, Melbourne, and Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, 2024.
