One-of-a-kind original

Tracey Lamb’s sculptural practice reflects her interest in modern design, architecture and minimalism. Each piece may be conceived as a drawing prior to making, or intuitively shaped as an abstracted form, inspired by objects or arrangements she finds within the designed environment. The steel sculptures are then cut, welded and polished by hand, leaving the markings of making and process evident. The sculptures playfully take their name from the idea of an operational verb, used in the spatial language of architecture to explore the abstraction of space and form.

This latest series of sculptures is very much influenced by mid-century, minimal design. They have been made throughout the various lockdowns of 2021. Tracey has worked with and manipulated the inherent properties of the material to produce these brushed steel sculptures, coated in clear enamel. Each new work incorporates spun steel domes that have been sliced into segments and arranged in an intuitive manner, delicately balancing each piece to maintain the centre of gravity. The surface of the sculptures expresses and shows the haptic energy and markings of the artist’s work as each section has been cleaned, sanded, and buffed by hand. The result being a series of five playful works consisting of two roughly symmetrical sculptures and three pieces that demonstrate a joyous and expressive sense of rhythm and movement.
