📍 The Darling, Sydney

Our interior design team has refurbished the 16 executive suites in the Forbes 5-star rated hotel The Darling Sydney. Initially commissioned to undertake a ‘light-touch’ FFE exercise, the brief expanded to include renovations of the sleeping, dwelling, and corridor areas, detailed art curation, and bespoke furniture creation, transforming the suites entirely.

The design plays upon a captivating duality: rest and play while diffusing the hotel’s signature red branding through a spectrum of hues throughout the executive levels.

Says Charmaine of her latest body of work: “The landscapes of Country have been my inspiration. Conveying the lay of the land and First Nations people’s connection to place. Rivers and mountains are themes that have always run through my work. A sense of place also is important in my works. That sense of belonging is very powerful. Grounds you.

“Connection to history and Country has always grounded my practice within a deeply authentic place. I am tracing over the landscapes with my brush, feeling my way into the mystery of our lives and the places our families have lived.

“I have a strong sense of place to my homelands connecting me to Country. As I travel this Country I feel connected with the landscapes.”

Nestled within heritage-listed gardens in Sydney’s Double Bay, this late 70s, early 80s apartment—for clients who have owned it since inception—has retained much of its original character. The design approach focused on preserving the clients’ fond memories while introducing subtle yet impactful updates to enhance functionality and aesthetics.⁠

Reflecting on the project, Dean Williams of @architect.george expresses pride in the seamless integration of contemporary design with the apartment’s rich history.
