THE CORNER OF MY SKY
Theresa Hunt’s solo exhibition, The Corner of My Sky, presents a profoundly introspective and emotionally resonant collection of oil paintings, inspired by her time residing in Italy, Romania and the coastal regions of Sydney.
Drawing from her distinctive filmmaker’s viewpoint, Theresa Hunt’s paintings skilfully employ the dynamics of shifting light, shadow and perspective, luring the spectator into the complexity of the natural world and the vastness of the landscapes we encounter. Each piece mirrors a sense of wonder that resides within us, stirring our innermost emotions, and evoking a lucidity that dwells beneath the surface, in the depths of our being.
I find it hard to articulate my work and how I create it. It’s the hardest part of my practice in so many ways. A meditation on a thought? A vessel of the sublime? The feeling of moving through the sea or sky as the colours, sounds and elements wash across me feels the same as when I wash pigment across the canvas with my brush. I am moving with the elements as I translate them through paint, a language I can create with my hands, with paint and canvas, but cannot speak with words.
I aim to evoke a meditative state, offering a space for introspection and self- discovery. The horizon creates a harmony of aesthetic restraint—I use it to unearth the profound power of quiet, where the whispers of emotions resonate deeply. Sea, sky and land come together to form emotions that transcend—inviting you to pause, reflect, and embrace the beauty within these fluid emotional intersections.
I like to take the viewer on a journey between emotional realms, where highs and lows converge. My aesthetic strips away distractions, allowing solace to flourish. In a world often saturated with noise and distraction, my intent is to create a haven that grants permission for stillness.
My paintings are never planned but spontaneously rise and fall through the application of layers. There is the slow emergence of a wave, a tree, a mountain ridge, illuminated by the luminescence of morning or setting sun within the mist. The depth of colour fields balanced through portals of light and natural phenomena imbues the swell of emotion preserved within the canvas. The simplest moments of awe can mirror the awe within us as we find the natural world stirring our deepest emotions, the ones that exist just beyond our own comprehension.
Through measured simplicity, I create a space for introspection, inviting you to explore the delicate balance between emotions to find calm.
