Lilli Waters' body of work, Pay Attention to the Heavens, is inspired by the iconography of ancient Greek and Roman mythology, its folklore, and its religious paintings, recasting the contemporary woman as a powerful goddess of nature and a portrayal of femininity that we should celebrate, embrace, and worship.
Says Lilli of this work: "Says Lilli Waters of this work: “This photograph was taken in the Tidal River on Yiruk Wamoon, the land of the Boonwurrung, Bunurong and Gunaikurnai people. The river runs into the bay, swells with the tide, and has a fascinating range of colours, purple-yellow and emerald. On this day the rising tide created a singularly enchanting sandy whirlpool I’d never seen here before. The water glistened in the morning sun, sparkling on the women’s skins, creating warmth and aliveness as the women slipped in and out of the water. “It was a surreal scene to witness these fearless brave women floating down the river, clinging to each other under the fabric to stay together. By flipping the image upside down, they become angels or deities, floating as if the cloud-like background was a playground for the figures to perform on. The sun was beautifully peering through the clouds that morning, creating a soft shard of light that brings life to their world. The emotional gestures and relationships between the subjects bring questions to mind, ambiguities. The space between power, harmony, and unrest. Are they rising or falling? Struggling, battling forces or unified and symbiotic?”

"It was so beautiful observing the fearless brave energy of these women as they dived into the water with so much joy and freedom, even when they had such little control in the strong undercurrent. Unable to hold a pose, I would yell out ‘Just let go!’ and watch them helplessly being sucked into the eye of the whirlpool, their luminous limbs gracefully inging about. I watched in awe of their playful bodies and interaction in this wild water in which I had placed them, dramatic and otherwordly. "These are the moments when photography makes me feel so alive. I see my process as a special collaboration with women and with nature - whatever happens on the other side of the lens is somewhat out of my control, and there can be wildness to it. The magic, mystery, joy, and wonder lie in what happens within that space, and bearing witness to it, regardless of the months of preparation leading up to a photo series. It often feels like a journey of intensive planning and then a forced ‘letting go’ of control in the moment, where photographs often emerge with their own integrity."

"These god-like female figures submerge and reemerge, playful, yet with purpose and almost ritualistic. The dramatic watery clouds appear alive and this dreamlike, ethereal playground encircles these swirling figures. The sun was beautifully peering through the clouds that morning, creating a soft shard of light that brought them an angelic-like glow. I like to imagine that these women are sensual and mysterious gatekeepers that rule the underworld, dancing in the playful hours. The silent brooding surge surrounding them is their refuge, perhaps a pathway to enlightenment."

Katrina O’Brien’s striking works of ink, acrylic and graphite sway between painting and drawing. Indeed, Katrina sees her artwork as a kind of dance, and a way of delving into her own and others’ inner psyche.
Says Katrina: "The only way to describe this work is with the following story..." I walked to the ocean and stood on the sand. Long dress flowing in the warm breeze which was pulling my hair towards the sea. I took off my shoes and left them behind. Slowly but steadily I stepped into the water. It called to me in a way it hadn’t before. It used to call me to lay under the waves, to close my eyes and let it wash me away. This call was different. As I walked into the water, it went over my head but I could still breathe – though it was a different breath to that which I breathed on land. (It was somehow easier to breathe in the purposeful waters.) My feet touched the ocean floor, as if there were lead in them to weigh me down….yet my steps were light as a lovers gentle kiss. The darkness never overtook me. There was always a light before me. The more I walked, the more I realised I was glowing with purpose. I passed through ancient realms that felt so familiar to me, as if I’d been there before. Footsteps lay before me in the sand that were the same size as mine. Had I dreamt of this place? Had I been there before? There was no night or day, just a passage through time, lit up by the promise of something long desired but never realised. The light became clearer and brighter and I knew what was coming. I walked out of the sea to where you were waiting on the shore and you embraced me – a wordless embrace, full of knowledge. Kindred spirits – displaced by time. The water from my wet body didn’t seep into your clothes but your body dried mine with your warmth. Signed on front.
