Are We Civilized?

Kevin Perkins

Acrylic on canvas

H 35cm x W 45cm x D 2cm

Stretched canvas, unframed

Kevin Perkins draws from the current political climate and transforms it onto a jungle of raw brush stokes of colour and form. He says: “I am perplexed and appalled by the hateful rhetoric, ignorance and what seems to be the end of civility from a large number of my countrymen. I cannot comprehend why or how one person can look at another person and hate them for being different.”

Ever enthralled by the natural world, Kevin uses earthy colour combinations, rich textures and the rhythms of life and death found in nature to create works that conjure up traditional landscape paintings yet veer into abstraction. Working with acrylic paint primarily on canvas, cotton and paper, his paintings are a synthetic beauty, an icon of the natural world. Perkins’ work intends to evoke a dialogue with the natural landscape with an attentiveness to the present moment without being tied to the particularity of place.
