Hawkesbury Calm from Belinda Street’s Rivers series was painted following an artist residency at Marramarra on the Hawkesbury River. These paintings are focused on the shoreline of the river and the steep incline of the land behind the Marramarra Cottage, located in an isolated part of Hawkesbury.

Street creates a visual experience that transcends pictorial narrative through a combination of gestural brushstrokes and her mastery of colour. These works explore the relationship between representation and abstraction, allowing the artist to expressively blend both the visual characteristics of place with personal feelings, experience and knowledge. Each painting has its own life and individuality, capturing a sense of place which is personal, while also speaking to the viewer.
