Says Isabelle of this work: “Our beauty resides not in the symmetry of our face but the history, experiences and memories that shape us.
My work often explores the abstract nature of ‘identity’. Identity is complicated, it is shapeshifting and subjective. How can we begin to describe something so multilayered? We often tie identity into physicality, this man with the glasses, that person with pink hair. And in art, we look at the gaze of the subject, what emotions can we glean? But yet as humans, so often we feel that our identity is not our physicality, but the experiences and emotions that created us.
Inversions of Self references not only the inverted nature of the colours in the painting, but the yearning to be seen for more than this physicality.”
