Natalie Rosin says of this work: “Both memory and clay share the quality of abstraction; as clay lacks precision in its form, memories too are often incomplete and subjective, offering a unique and imperfect reflection of our past. This sculpture is inspired by my memory of the art deco ‘la pacifique’ apartment building in Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Having passed this building many times both in the past and more recently, I always made note of its art deco curves, its discernible presence along Campbell Parade achieved by its bright blue facade. Just as I sculpt clay into a form, aiming to capture the image of this structure, I am reminded that even the most meticulous efforts may still fall short of perfection. The imprecise nature of clay echoes the fallibility of my recollections, as nuances and details may elude both the material and my memories. Uncovered in this process is beauty in the imperfections, in the unique representation and conversation between the artist and the past, both shaped by the hands of time and experience.”
