Says Susie of this work: “Depicting geographies has never been the primary motivation of my artwork; articulating an awareness that my body is woven into the landscape, both physically and spiritually, is the true rationale underpinning these landscape-based paintings. Emphasis on light and atmosphere points to unseen energies in the natural world. In the creative act of slowing down and attuning my senses to the landscape, I access a world of energetic exchange where motifs of waves and clouds and even rocks ‘float’ through space and time. This cultivated curiosity is what Australian filmmaker, Rebecca Barry, calls ‘subversive enchantment.’ Being enchanted by nature is not without consequence; it is an act of potent power that challenges existing Western paradigms. A poetic act can be a political act.”
