Susie Dureau’s Returning, 2023, is a record of the rainbow that marked the end of the 2022 New South Wales floods. The trees emerged from the fog, the grasses peaked up towards the sun and the valley began an ancient process of regeneration. Says Susie of this work, “Returning conveys a sense of the intimate entanglements that bind me to the earth and its systems, a subject that is integral to my painting practice.”

Returning was made through the Nancy Fairfax Artist In Residence Program where Susie was based during the floods of 2022. Susie was awarded a solo show at the gallery in 2023, through a partnership between the Tweed Regional Gallery and The National Art School, for excellence in painting.
