Says Karlien of this work: “I think of this piece as a ritual vessel, remembering Spinifex piercing my skin on bush walks and the joys of watching them burn in managed bushfires. This work aims to channel the godly presence of Spinifex on Country and the respect it demands for walking through it.”
Karlien’s sculptures are concerned with perspectives on social and environmental sustainability. Utilising the visceral and time-capturing qualities of clay and memory, she creates stylised ‘termite-mound’ vessels.
