MEMORIES FROM A HOLIDAY, 2023 by AMY WRIGHT • Ac MEMORIES FROM A HOLIDAY, 2023 by AMY WRIGHT • Acrylic, charcoal, oil + silk on canvas • 128cm H x 95cm W • Framed

In this work, Amy Wright focuses on the experimental use of working methods and textural surfaces, bringing together a range of mixed mediums in various applications.

Says Amy: “My muse, forever being the garden and my natural environment, is depicted in various guises. The light and essence of the garden is captured in rambunctious overtures of watery effects and drawing directly with paint. I’ve attempted to portray the quietness and calmness of the garden through sparse use of line work and a vagueness of shape and colour, which opens the painting up, giving an impression of space. Through textile application, the works shift with the breeze, or throw shadows as sun falls across the surface. As is true to the physical garden, no two glances are ever the same.”

Featured work:

SPECTATOR, 2023 by MARIA KOSTAREVA • Oil on canvas • 110cm H x 90cm W
One-of-a-kind original

This work by Maria Kostareva is part of her series, ‘Precious Place’. Maria strives for mindfulness through capturing and bringing to life those images that we normally endure only for a short while. She seeks harmony between humankind and urban architecture, similar to the unity with nature. The composition of her artworks is based on the principle of an accidental photo. The figures appear on the canvas, just as they would to a human eye, only partly. The images do not unfold into a narrative: they are nothing but the moments appropriated from eternity.

Says Maria of this work: “These characters, while remaining formally alone, find a reflection of their inner world in surrounding spaces. I would like to convey the close connection between a person and a place. At first glance, these are unremarkable spaces, yet filled with personal experiences; they take on a new sound. Quiet walks, observation, self-talk, the process of cutting – everything becomes meaningful in a precious place. And our inner strength lies in the ability to create such places.

“Painting allows me to share a personal impression of place with the viewer, who breathes new meaning into it.”

Last day to catch ISABELLE DE KLEINE’s solo show Last day to catch ISABELLE DE KLEINE’s solo show WORLD WAS ON FIRE 10am-5pm today. View catalogue via link in bio.

Featured work:

IN WITTENOOM, 2023 by ISABELLE DE KLEINE • Watercolour, gouache + acrylic on paper • Framed size: 87.5cm H x 68.5cm W • Framed under Perspex in Tasmanian oak

This work is part of Isabelle de Kleine’s solo exhibition World Was on Fire.

Says Isabelle of her work: “Nestled between spinifex-covered hills, the iron cliffs and waters below, lies the forgotten home. This work explores the feeling of driving through the ghost town of Wittenoom and surrounding landscape. The reverence felt for a once thriving town, built in hope and prosperity, now lost to memory. Wiped from the maps, it elicits a somber awe for both the grandeur of its beauty and its ultimate tragedy.

“My body of work comprises a series of mixed media watercolour paintings that explore the complexities, struggles and richness of human experience. The works speak of the dualities of love and loss, light and dark, the web of experience that weaves together the beautiful and flawed tapestry of ourselves.”

ALICHIA VAN RHIJN’s solo show SWEET SPOT finishe ALICHIA VAN RHIJN’s solo show SWEET SPOT finishes today in our Woolloomooloo gallery 10am-5pm. Catalogue via link in bio.

Featured work:

SORE SPOTS, 2023 by ALICHIA VAN RHIJN • Glazed earthenware + composite gold • 23cm H x 15cm W x 13.5cm D • One-of-a-kind original

This work is part of Alichia van Rhijn’s Sweet Spot—a collection of vibrant ceramic sculptural works that reference recent personal experiences and struggles, alongside early memories of childhood both before her immigration to Australia from South Africa, and her time in her adopted homeland.

The forms embody a combination of joy, pain, heartache, acceptance and perseverance. Overwhelming exhaustion and sadness are interspersed with moments of success and pure joy. Finding these moments or ‘sweet spots’ to keep going through adversity, underpins the dialogue between the multi-faceted elements and anthropomorphic forms. They are in a constant state of flux—shifting and changing as they span the fluidity of time.

Featured work:
REWRITTEN, 2023 by ISABELLE DE KLEINE • Watercolour, gouache + acrylic on paper • Framed size: 123cm H x 127cm W • One-of-a-kind • Framed under Perspex in Tasmanian oak

Says Isabelle of her work: “A story revised, a memory reimagined, a reality reshaped. The figure sits in longing, reaching for something no longer there. A creation that didn’t exist, a power that was never real.

“My body of work comprises a series of mixed media watercolour paintings that explore the complexities, struggles and richness of human experience. The works speak of the dualities of love and loss, light and dark, the web of experience that weaves together the beautiful and flawed tapestry of ourselves.

“The figures depicted are envoys of my contemplations on identity and the psyche. When realisation comes that our reality is fabrication, when we understand the fallibility of ourselves and the falsities we have created; what remains? Who do we become? The works depict the liminal space that we occupy when we are left in loss, and the reconstruction of self that occurs in the wake of grief.”
