Lily Cummin’s, Until the Darkness Softly Clears, is part of her latest series, There was a time before you, there will be a time after you. Lily says of the work: “This painting, Until the Darkness Softly Clears was the catalyst for this new body of work and was, for me a reminder of the joy of painting and mark making on a larger scale.

“My practice has recently been concerned with a return to painting and installation and how the two can simultaneously coexist and diverge. This body of work is an exploration of a divergence that can occur within an inner dimension and a deeper consciousness, a dream space. The results are a strange universe of dreamlike imagery and uncanny scenes.”

Lily’s practice is intuitive and relies on her imagination to conjure up scenes of nostalgia for a memory the audience will never know or a place they have never been. However, the familiarity of these enigmatic places is deliberate as Lily draws on her own memories to weave a dream-like patchwork of dissonant colours and marks.
